Agent Authorisation

In order for us to act on behalf of you with HMRC we need to be authorised as your agent.

Each tax requires a separate authorisation (eg VAT, corporation tax, PAYE, self-assessment).

Agent authorisation means that you allow HMRC to talk to us, and share information with us, about your or your tax affairs.

There are some things we can do without being registered but these are largely limited to filing tax returns on behalf of you.

Without agent authorisation we can

  • File RTI payroll returns
  • File corporation tax returns
  • File self-assessment tax returns

However we cannot do lots of other important things such as

  • We cannot file VAT returns!
  • We cannot see your account to check what taxes you have paid and what you owe
  • We cannot talk to HMRC about anything to do with your business or you as a person.

So its really important that we get authorised to be able to provide you with the level of service you need.

Getting Authorised

The process is simple

  1. We request HMRC send you a code
  2. You receive that code about two weeks later
  3. You email us that code
  4. We give that code back to HMRC…

…and hey-presto we are authorised.
